When things get dangerous enough that this type of force or action is necessary, a cop on the beat would be out gunned or out manned. That's when they call in these guys. Basically the tactical team is the 9-1-1 for the police officer.   20 of Berks County's finest will eventually make up the new Berks County Emergency Response Team. It is a team, but not like one these athletes have ever played on. >> Capt. Chambers Unlike a sports team in a way, these guys are going to be faced with a new and different game each time, the rules change each time they go out. >>Reporter The Northeast Chester County Emergency Response Team is handling this training, and still handles many of the SWAT calls in Berks. The hope is, that will end in 18 months when this group is done with their initial training. >>Nat Running >>Joel D. Smith Nearly 20 hours of running, thinking and shooting might seem extreme. This day might be harder than any they experience in the real world. Instructors here say, Good. >> Capt. Andy Chambers As a SWAT operator, you can't hit the wall on a real job, it doesn't work, so these guys have to know, they've far exceeded what they're going to experience on a real call out. Sgt. Andy Reber This is the high point of police work, this is what we all aspire to. We take the job for the action. >>Reporter Leaders here say the action only happens about once a month for a SWAT team. But whether it's a school shooting or a standoff... they want to have a Berks team ready. >>Target nat >>Reporter The target date to start if funds are found, maybe from Homeland Security or a state grant, is 2009. In East Whiteland Township, Chester County, Joel D. Smith, 69 News Berks Edition.
