The Conservative Political Action Conference was looking pretty tame, but then Ann Coulter opened her big mouth.

Coulter is the blonde rude,big mouth commentator who makes a living saying what decent folk won’t say, but sick un American right wing audiences love to hear. She sent a tremor through the political world this afternoon when she called Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards a “faggot,” and got a round of cheers and applause.

The CPAC meeting is an annual confab of movement conservatives. In presidential election cycles, it serves as a cattle show for Republican candidates.

The crowd had heard from Vice President Dick Cheney, Rep. Tom Tancredo of Colorado, former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and other candidates when Coulter took the stage this afternoon.

Just moments before, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had told the faithful, “I am happy to hear that after you hear from me, you will hear from Ann Coulter. That is a good thing.”

Then, at the end of her prepared remarks, Coulter said: “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I — so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Gay rights organizations responded immediately, and called on the Republican candidates to disown Coulter.

“To interject this word into American political discourse is a vile and disgusting way to sink the debate to a new, all-time low,” said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.
