TALLAHASSEE A national liberal think tank has attacked a Republican plan in Florida that would do away with property taxes.
The House G-O-P plan would raise the state sales tax from 6 percent to 8.5 percent while eliminating the property tax on primary homes, and create a rollback on taxes on other real estate.
The Washington, D-C-based Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which issued its report Tuesday, argued that a higher sales tax would take a greater percentage of income from poorer people.
The report also compared the proposed plan to the spending limits in Colorado which voters suspended in 2005 because they led to heavy cuts in spending on education, roads and health care.
