REGIONAL RED TIDE SUMMARIES (June 29)
East Region: No event.
Northwest Region: Water samples collected this week south of the St. Marks River (Wakulla County) contained no Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism. A fish kill was reported in Fort Walton Beach (Okaloosa County) however a cause has not been determined.
Southwest Region: No Karenia brevis, the Florida red tide organism, was detected this week in alongshore sampling conducted between Pinellas and Collier counties. Offshore samples collected west of Venice (Sarasota County) also contained no K. brevis. A report of murky, discolored water and an associated fish kill near Big Pine Key in the Florida Keys is currently being investigated. Discolored water due to a bloom of the non-toxic cyanobacteria Trichodesmium remains possible in southern Lee County.
The FWRI Red Tide Status Line is now available to callers to hear a recording detailing red tide conditions throughout the state. FWRI updates the recording each Friday by 5 p.m. after sampling efforts for the week have been completed and analyzed. Red Tide Status Line: (866) 300-9399 (toll-free inside Florida only); (727) 552-2448 (outside Florida).
