Part of Seventh Ave. near Times Square was shut down briefly Tuesday afternoon after a suspicious package was found at the corner of 42nd St. The package was later found to be a piece of abandoned luggage.
Bomb squad investigators closed several blocks to traffic to investigate the package, which witnesses described as a red bag.
Police arrived at the scene around 3 p.m.
"We're just taking precautions because it's a high-profile location," police department spokesman Martin Brown said.
Seventh Avenue was closed from West 39th Street to West 42nd Street, and motorists were re-routed to Fifth Avenue or Ninth Avenue, a FDNY source said.
Seventh Avenue was open to traffic again by 4:30 p.m. An MTA spokesperson said subways were not affected.
