GREENACRES - A case of MRSA has been found at the Heritage Elementary School in Greenacres, the county Health Department said.
The principal at the school sent out letters to parents Thursday saying
the school had three cases but only one was found Friday when the
Health Department investigated, county Health Department spokesman Tim
O'Connor said Saturday. He said the case is being treated and there is
no longer any threat at the school, located at 5100 Melaleuca Lane. The
MRSA infection is not something that must be reported to authorities,
O'Connor said.
The federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that
95,000 Americans contract and 19,000 die yearly from,
methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is not killed
by a common class of antibiotics. O'Connor said one of the best ways of
MRSA prevention is good hygiene.
