Buchanan votes to override another Bush veto E-mail
Written by Sun Herald
Thursday, 17 July 2008

For the fifth time, U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Longboat Key, showed little hesitation in joining Democrats to override a veto issues by President George W. Bush.

On Tuesday, the U.S. House easily overcame Bush’s veto of legislation protecting doctors from a 10.6 percent cut in their reimbursement rates when treating Medicare patients. The House voted 383-41.

In May, Buchanan joined 99 other Republicans to override Bush’s veto of the $290 billion farm bill.

But don't think his overrides will stop Democrats from blasting Buchanan for being too much in line with the President in his votes. Democrat Christine Jennings frequently criticizes Buchanan's voting record for being too close to Republican House leadership and with the president.

According a Washington Post analysis, Buchanan has voted with House Republican leadership 90.6 percent of the time over 1,661 votes.

How much Buchanan votes with party leaders and Bush should be a key point in the upcoming election given how low President Bush's approval ratings are, even among likely Republican voters.

Here are the other vetoes Buchanan has voted to override:

Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007, Dec. 12, 2007. Override failed.

Water Resources Development Act of 2007 -- Nov. 2, 2007. Override succeeded.

Children's Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2007 -- Oct. 3, 2007. Override failed.
