City leaders took the first step toward opening a new fire station on the fast-growing east side of the city at an estimated $1.5 million cost to taxpayers.
On Tuesday, the council unanimously approved paying BMK Architects Inc. $157,285 to design the 12,000-square-foot, four-bay station, which will be built on property the city already owns on the south side of Laurel Road, east of I-75 and the entrance to the Venetian Golf and River Country Club.
Sarasota County EMS personnel will also dispatch from the new station, which is expected to open in about 18 months.
In a presentation at Tuesday's City Council meeting, Fire Chief Michael Johnson said the number of calls rose from 1,994 in 1999 to 2,531 last year
Prior to December 1998, the department handled between 500 and 600 incidents per year, Johnson said, before entering into an agreement with the county to assist with EMS calls.
