SARASOTA - Six months of red tide here on the Suncoast, and many fishermen see no end in sight.
Fishermen are calling it the worst year to catch fish they've ever seen. Red tide has plagued Suncoast waters for 6 months killing thousands of fish, and many fishermen say it's not getting better.
For months fishermen have been waiting for the red tide to disappear, like years before, but it's not going away, and it's killing the businesses for Suncoast charter fishermen in the area.
People who want to go fishing aren't calling the charter guidesmen, because they know they're not going catching anything.
Many fishermen say on a good day they'll catch a couple of fish, where normally if the red tide wasn't there they would hook onto hundreds.
Capt. Jonnie Walker, ABC 7's Charter Fishermen: "Normally on a fishing trip you may catch 100 fish…lady fish, jacks, and some good fish…but right now we're having trouble catching lady fish or jacks."
The red tide is so bad many charter business owners are having to get part jobs to stay a float.
One local charter fishermen says he has to go 20 miles away from shore just to hook onto some keeper fish.
More victims of red tide are the waterfront restaurants and bait shops, who are all losing money because of the toxic algae that makes customers cough.
