Red tide suspected in deaths of ten sea turtles E-mail

CLEARWATER, Fla. - Officials at the Clearwater Marine Aquarium say ten sea turtles found dying on Pinellas County beaches might have been suffering from red tide poisoning.

The aquarium's director of community relations says normally the facility gets only one sea turtle reported dead each month.

One male loggerhead found floating near a sandbar off St. Pete Beach survived. The 20-year-old turtle is recovering at the aquarium, where staff are keeping it covered by wet towels because it's not strong enough to hold its head above water.

Red tide poisoning killed 29 manatees off Fort Myers over a ten-day period in March.
