Corrections officer arrested for having sex with inmate

The Charlotte County Sheriff's Office has arrested a Corrections Officer for sexual misconduct with a female inmate.

According to the report, information was received that there was an inappropriate relationship between the 32 year-old Corrections Officer, Robert John Stenlund, and an inmate.

The Probable Cause Affidavit states that allegations were investigated, yielding evidence that a sexual relationship possibly occurred on or around May 22 in the County Jail.

In a meeting with Detectives, the inmate admitted she and the CO did engage in a sexual act and said it was consensual. Detectives also met with Stenlund and confirmed the inmate's statements that he did engage in a sexual act while on duty in the jail.

Stenlund was arrested Thursday night and charged with felony Sexual Misconduct Between a Detention Employee and Inmate.

According to Sheriff Davenport, Stenlund has been placed on administrative leave, and per Sheriff's Office policy, an internal investigation will be conducted to ascertain any further allegations of misconduct.

He is a six-year veteran of the Sheriff's Office and had been assigned to the Corrections Division since his hire in 2000.

Sheriff Davenport stated, "It is unfortunate that there are times when we have to arrest one of our own members for alleged criminal misconduct. An event such as this gives a black eye to the profession and to the other members of the Office who work so very hard each and every day to provide effective public safety to our citizens. We will continue however to aggressively investigate all allegations of misconduct by our members, and, if substantiated, act in a swift and decisive manner. The citizens of Charlotte County expect nothing less from their Sheriff and their Sheriff's Office, and they deserve nothing less."
