85 Cameras To Keep An Eye On The Turnpike

(CBS4/AP) WEST PALM BEACH One of the busiest sections of Florida's turnpike, the section through Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, is soon to be the most-watched.

In the next few months, officals plan to install 85 closed circuit television cameras, one every mile, on the section of road from Boca Raton to Fort Pierce.

Officials say the $6 million system will cut down on the time it takes to detect and clear incidents. Motorists will also be able to log onto the turnpike's Web site to view real-time pictures of road conditions for themselves.

The project is part of a five year "intelligent transportation" program on the state's turnpike system.

When the project is finished, there will be cameras every mile from Homestead to Wildwood. That's a distance of more than 300 miles. Pavement sensors placed every half-mile will also detect slowdowns.
