Let Florida act like national leader E-mail

Florida has many issues, many of which will be decided in November. There are concerns about counting ballots. I'd like to suggest we go back to the old, original method of marking an X next to the name of the person we're voting for, with a duplicate copy for the voter to retain.

The Florida education system is in shambles and rated among the worst in the nation. The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is a source of income for Neil Bush, who has a financial interest in the software company, but is of no benefit to students.

"No child left behind" means availing our kids of a good, basic education. Being able to read, "See Spot run," does not constitute literacy and should not be used as a yardstick to promote students through the system.

Florida also trails the nation with its "family values" laws. We need to advance our thinking and policies to reflect the 21st century. Race and nationality define us, definitions of God divide us, and "God's word" has many interpretations. We need to take care of our own lives, be honest and caring, and let others live as they wish as long as they're not harming us or others.

C'mon, Florida, let's truly be a national leader in all areas and stop flopping around on the bottom of the social, educational and political barrel.
