Women's testimony continues at FCI trial

One by one, women walked into a federal courtroom Wednesday to testify against two correctional officers charged in a sex-with-prisoners conspiracy on Day Three of their trial.

Ten women, some in suits and others in chains and prison uniforms, described their encounters with the two men at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tallahassee.

Alan Moore and Gregory Dixon are two of five FCI officers arrested June 21. A sixth officer, Ralph Hill, was killed in a shootout at FCI after he opened fire on federal agents. Moore and Dixon are facing trial on charges of mail fraud, bribery, witness tampering and conspiracy. The other officers, Alfred Barnes, Vincent Johnson and E. Lavon Spence, earlier pleaded guilty to mail fraud.

Some women told jurors they had sex with the officers in exchange for banned items. Others said they acted as lookouts or paid the officers to bring packages containing banned items into the prison. Defense attorneys tried to prove the witnesses were testifying in exchange for a reduced sentence.

One woman told jurors she had sex with Barnes and Moore.

"It wasn't a written agreement or anything like that," she said, referring to Barnes. She had sex with him "for the things that he brought me," she said. Moore, she said, entered her cell one night while her cellmate was sleeping. They had sex twice that night, she said.

A former inmate testified that she often acted as a lookout for Barnes. On one occasion, Dixon propositioned her, she said. On being questioned by defense attorneys, she said she didn't say anything about it earlier because "it was bad for me to cooperate while I was at FCI."

Another inmate, serving time for murder, said she had sex with Hill over a six-month period. On one occasion, she said, Dixon told her he "treated all females like they were wearing wires," and groped her. She told jurors Moore also talked to her about Hill.

One inmate, serving time on drug charges, told jurors Dixon "kinda took me under his wing ... looked at me like a little brother."

The Tallahassee Democrat is not using the women's names because of concerns raised by the U.S. Attorney's Office about identifying them.

The trial continues today.
