Patriot Act deal faces hurdles CAPITOL HILL (AP) - An extension of the Patriot Act faces a possible Senate filibuster.
Congressional Republican leaders want the bill passed next week. But a group of six senators, three of each party, is pushing for changes.
Yesterday's deal between Senate and House negotiators extends the government's ability to gain personal data, including library and medical records. It also offers a four-year extension of roving wiretaps and other tools for investigators.
But Wisconsin Democrat Russell Feingold says the "battle is not over." He promises to do all he can to stop it, including a filibuster.
He's among the six senators calling for revisions to give law enforcement officers "the tools they need while providing safeguards to protect the constitutional rights of all Americans."
Democrats Dick Durbin of Illinois and Ken Salazar of Colorado joined Feingold. The Republicans include John Sununu of New Hampshire, Larry Craig of Idaho and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska.
