A man suspected of firing an assault rifle at two Florida City police officers Saturday night barricaded himself in a house in Homestead this morning and fired at least 20 rounds at Homestead Police, police said.
Officers from various agencies tried to get the man -- whom police identified only by his last name, Estrada -- to give himself up.
The manhunt and standoff were the aftermath of an incident Saturday night in Florida City. There, police responded to a call for help at a residence, where two men jumped into a black Chevy Tahoe and fled.
During the ensuing chase, both men fired at police -- at least one of them with an AK-47, police said. One of the men, arrested this morning, has been identified as Samuel Mendoza, police said.
Florida City police said Samuel Mendoza is the brother of Salvador Mendoza, who was convicted in 2004 in the shooting of Homestead Police officer Edgard Rivera. Rivera was blinded in the shooting. Salvador Mendoza was sentenced to life in prison.
''I guess it runs in the family,'' said Florida City Police Sgt. Barbara Barrett.
Though police lost the black Tahoe Saturday night, it was later found, abandoned, with shell casings inside. On Monday morning, Florida City police got a tip that Mendoza and the other man, who police say is Estrada, were in Homestead.
Samuel Mendoza was taken into custody; but Estrada barricaded himself in a house in the area of Northwest Sixth Street and Sixth Avenue in Homestead.
Officers from at least three local police agencies flooded the area. Two Blackhawk helicopters from nearby Homestead Air Reserve Base were buzzing above the city, doing circles, assisting the law officers on the ground.
Officers from Homestead, Florida City and Miami-Dade were involved in the manhunt. Miami-Dade's special response team -- which operates as a SWAT unit -- was dispatched to the scene to assist. Homestead's police force does not have a SWAT team to deal with barricaded subjects.
