** Board set a $32,506 salary, approved district salary schedule
MURDOCK -- Charlotte County School Board members set their own annual salaries Tuesday.
The five board members unanimously approved a 3 percent salary increase, from $31,516 to $32,506, as recommended by the Florida School Boards Association.
"It's a small raise, but (I'll) continue to work hard for the citizens of Charlotte County," Chairwoman Andrea Messina said.
School Board salaries were based on FSBA recommendations until 2002, when the state gave school boards the freedom to set their own. But some boards, such as Charlotte, still follow the FSBA's suggested salary figures.
The board also approved the district salary schedule for the current year, which includes salaries for each position in the district based on experience level.
Even though most of the salary schedule has already been negotiated and approved, the board must approve the collective document, said Doug Whittaker, assistant superintendent of human resources and employee relations.
The salary schedule reflects that teachers, on average, received a 6.5 percent increase this year, which was approved in November 2005 as part of a three-year contract. The salary schedule shows that a first-year teacher with a bachelor's degree earns $36,000. Last fiscal year, the same teacher made $31,748.
